Whitmer: Six-Phase Plan ‘Critical’ to Reopening Michigan’s Economy

In the last eight weeks or so, Michigan has passed through two phases of the COVID-19 pandemic: Uncontrolled growth and persistent spread.

According to the MI Safe Start Plan she’s using to re-engage the state’s economy in light of the fight against the coronavirus, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Thursday Michigan has moved into the third stage, which is why she’s slowly reopening the state economy.

Construction, Real Estate Activity Next Up for Reopening

She said it first on Wednesday, and on Friday Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made it official, signing an executive order that not only reopens the construction industry, but it adds real estate activity and work that is traditionally and primarily done outside.

Those industries are reopened effective Thursday.

Whitmer Extends Emergency, Keeps Bars, Casinos, Restaurants Closed Through May 28

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signing executive orders to extend the state’s state of emergency through May 28, and another setting guidelines for remote learning for the rest of the school year.

She also extended a previous order temporarily closing places such as theaters, bars and casinos through May 28. In order to maintain social distancing, that order also limits restaurants to carry-out and delivery orders.

Whitmer Extends Stay-at-Home Order, But Loosens Some Restrictions

At her coronavirus press conference, Whitmer announced she was extending the stay-at-home order through May 15. This new order immediately replaces the one she put into place in March and extended April 9. The move comes as Michigan’s caseload crosses 35,000 and the death toll from COVID-19 approaches 3,000.

Governor’s Message: Those Who Want Restrictions Eased Must ‘Stay Home’ Through April 30

The numbers of cases and deaths due to the coronavirus in Michigan are growing at a slower rate, reasons Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said are cause for “cautious optimism.” However, with the stay-at-home order she imposed set to expire April 30, Whitmer is urging those who want to see those restrictions eased to continue to “stay home,” observing social distancing measures she said have helped slow the disease’s spread.

Whitmer closes schools for remainder of the year

At a press conference Thursday, Whitmer answered those questions, suspending all face-to-face learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. She signed an executive order closing all K-12 buildings the rest of the year, unless restrictions are lifted. Read more
