Michigan Adds COVID Restrictions Amid Case, Hospitalization Surge

With more than 44,000 cases last week shattering the state’s weekly COVID-19 record for the fifth straight week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and state Health and Human Services chief Robert Gordon Sunday announced a variety of restrictions to try to help stem the tide of the virus.

The order takes effect Wednesday and runs through Dec. 8.

Governor Whitmer Opens Gyms and Allows Organized Sports to Resume

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-176 reopening Michigan’s gyms and pools and allowing organized sports practices and competitions to resume across the state. Gyms and pools may begin to reopen on Wednesday, September 9. The governor also signed Executive Order 2020-175 outlining strict workplace safety measures gyms and pools must follow to protect people from the spread of COVID-19.

Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-100 extending her Safer at Home order until June 12. The order, she said, also extends the closure of certain places of public accommodation such as theaters, gyms and casinos, a move she said “protects Michiganders from the spread of COVID-19.” The order had been scheduled to end May 28.
